One steamy hot summer, an abandoned Bulgarian beach provides shelter for a group of people who have, for various reasons, escaped from the city. A young couple on a romantic trip into nature want to leave all their troubles behind. A pair of brothers who have accidentally killed two secret agents are running away from the police. Then there is Ivo, who is trying to cheer up his friend whose wife has been unfaithful. Life is idyllic in this oasis of calm but it will not last forever. The group is bothered by the local investor who wants to build a new hotel on the beach, and conflict with the campers fighting for their newfound freedom cannot be avoided. This film about escaping from the city and fighting for personal freedom was an official Bulgarian Academy Award nominee.

Mariena and her cousin Roman live in a small Roma village in Slovakia. They have become known in the village for their unusual pastime: playing the songs of their idols, Karel Gott and Darina Rolinsová, and assuming their identities. Contrary to expectations, Mariena plays Karel and Roman plays Dara. One day, they decide to video themselves singing the famous duet Bells of Happiness, and they send a copy of it to their idols. This creates a mutual game between the protagonists and the film makers, and between the stars and their fans, which reveals their passion for life and their fascination with these show business stars.

Živa, Andrej, and Gregor were high school classmates. Some years later, they decide to take a trip to the seaside together, just like old times. They each carry a secret burden too big for them to cope with. Živa is preparing to study abroad, Gregor is still digesting his deployment in Afghanistan, and Andrej hides his bitterness and self-loathing under the guise of a funny guy role who likes to tease people around him. This dreamy road movie through the hot Slovenian countryside is one generation's tale about the transition from sweet idleness to fully accepting the responsibilities of one's own life.

2011 / 90 min. / Spain version with Czech subtitles
Director: Ignacio Ferreras

Old age is often regarded as the twilight of life, as something gloomy that we should dread. The animated film Wrinkles tries to change this perception by showing aging in a different light. The story of Emilio and Miguel, who meet in a retirement home, uncovers many taboos, but presents them with ease, dignity, and wit. This tragicomic story about old age is directed by Ignacio Ferreras and is based on the eponymous comic book by Paco Roca. It confirms the old truth that only in times of crisis do you realize who your true friends are, friends you may not even know existed.

Director: Boris Petkovic

In the Year of Hip Hop takes a retrospective look at the Slovenian hip hop/rap music scene. Boris Petkovič explores in great detail the evolution of a music style which, from the very start, has intimately reflected the social situation of its artists. Hip hop has always absorbed the "vibes" of the place where it is taking root, and Slovenia is no exception. According to Petkovic, in today's Slovenia, rap is the one and only form of music that discusses the state of our society and of human relationships without any inhibitions. If rap is not your cup of tea, this film can make you change your mind!

In the late 1970's the punk wave under the flag of the Sex Pistols conquered the entire world, and Norway was no exception. The encounter with punk turns out to be a crucial moment in the life of young Nikolaj. Spiky coloured hair, drugs, punk music, safety pins and a rejection of the world around him - for Nikolaj these are not only symbols of his personal freedom, but also a way to deal with the tragic death of his mother. When his free-thinking father, Magnus, starts to worship punk as well, events take an entirely new turn. The tragicomic film Sons of Norway turns the cliche "troubled son-caring father" upside down, and takes a fresh look at the punk rebellion across generations.

2011 / 119 min. / Thai-Bengali-Spanish version with English and Czech subtitles
Director: Michael Glawogger

This film is a triptych about prostitution: three locations, three languages, three religions. Paradise and the real world intertwine in prostitution, revealing an image of relationships between women and men. In Thailand, women wait behind shop windows, watching their own reflections in the glass. In Bangladesh, men enter the ghetto to fulfill their desires with the girls trapped in the crowded brothels. In Mexico, the women pray that they will not have to face this reality. This is a world where life's most private act becomes a commodity for sale, a commodity which is expensive and usually denounced. The reality of this world is surprising: beauty can be found within the cruelty and violence; the human mind can become a prison; and love blooms when least expected.

After a painful separation Louise ends up homeless and is forced to sleep in her car. While she earns a modest salary working as a hotel maid, she doesn't lose hope and continues fighting for a better future. Refusing help from even her closest friends, Louise struggles to make ends meet but is determined to succeed on her own. This realistic drama by director Cyril Mennegun is about a woman whose comfortable life is suddenly turned upside down, and she is left to balance on the edge of poverty. The film reflects the increasingly relevant European problem of a blurred distinction between a comfortable lifestyle and absolute poverty. Director: Janez Janša
Cast: Dražen Dragojević a další

Just how much does our name affect us, our identity, our lives? Is it a unique, personal trade mark, or a universal and transferable item? Is it easy to steal the identity of someone with the same name? Three Slovenian artists change their names, all taking the same name as the Slovenian Prime Minister, Janez Janša. Is this an artistic act or a provocation? What do they intend to achieve by changing their names? What does a name really mean in today's society? A number of artists, philosophers, linguists, and sociologists try to answer these questions. This unusual documentary chronicles an absurd Kafkaesque situation and reveals how much our name determines who we are or who we are not.

Sebastian is a successful doctor who lives with his teenage son Arthur. Sebastian prides himself on his open and casual relationship with his son — at least that’s the way he views it. But some people, including his Bulgarian cleaning lady Jana who is raising her daughter Vera with a firm and steady hand, think he is spoiling Arthur. One day the two teenagers secretly go to a party and do not return home until morning. Sebastian's easy going approach to the situation clashes with Jana's stubbornness. This is a personal drama about two people who have so much in common but still cannot find a common language.

Jevgeņijs Paškevičs tells the story of a woman who, like the biblical Lilith, is not created from Adam's rib but from the same clay as Adam. An immortal femme fatale, born free of original sin, she lives through the centuries, beginning fateful relationships with men whom she first dominates and then destroys. This strongly stylized film is divided into several historical periods, each having a distinctive visual style. 2012 / 90 min. / English-German-Spanish-Norwegian version with Czech subtitles

There are many environmental organizations trying to save the rain forests of the Amazon, but one charity group believes shooting porn movies can help achieve this goal. In this documentary, director Michal Marczak follows a group of Berlin-based activists, who, under the slogan "Fuck For Forest", make adult films and use the profits to buy back parts of the rain forest to help the natives of South America. Despite its title, the film is not trying to create a sexual sensation. It sensitively reveals the subculture of these eco-activists, and their motives in trying to help save nature and the tribal culture. The realization of their noble cause leads them along a very thorny path.

Comedian Dirch Passer was one of Denmark's most popular stars. The audiences loved his films and comedy sketches, but what did they know about his private life? Martin P. Zandvliet's biopic of Passer goes back to the 1960s and reveals Passer's intense loneliness concealed by his fame, and his obsessive, self-destructive desire to gain respect from the critics. Like most comedians, Dirch Passer tries to define himself as something other than a crowd-pleasing funny guy, but even his non-comic adaptation of Steinbeck's 'Of Mice and Men' causes the audience to laugh. This impressive film tells the story of fame on one side, and of the well-protected privacy of a broken and insecure man on the other.

Director: Mikael Marcimain
Cast: Pernilla August, Simon J Berger, David Dencik, Sven Nordin, Kristoffer Joner

Sweden in the 1970s was a time of liberalization and the sexual revolution, but also a period of tension caused by the cold war and the nuclear threat. This film, loosely based on actual events, follows the fate of two underaged girls who are seduced into a world of wild parties and white slavery. The brothel Madam introduces them to clients in high social circles, and soon they become a sought-after commodity for decadent soirées. Eventually, these professional female companions become the key to a political scandal that leads to the highest levels of government. This cold political thriller brilliantly evokes the atmosphere and the pervasive feeling of spying and distrust in the 1970s. Call Girl won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Toronto IFF and the Audience Award at the Stockholm IFF.

2009 / 144 min. / German version with Czech subtitles
Director: Michael Haneke
Cast: Ulrich Tukur, Susanne Lothar, Rainer Bock, Christian Friedel

A mysterious history of peculiar events comes to life in a story told by a village school teacher, who used to work in a North German village back in the years before the WWI. It all started one hot summer day, when the only doctor in the area seriously hurt himself in a horse riding accident. Shortly thereafter, the baron’s son was found in front of the castle door severely beaten. The number of seemingly unwarranted cases of violence is increasing and the villagers stop trusting each other, which increases the friction. The crust of social hierarchy and the tough Protestant upbringing begins to crack and releases suppressed conflicts between the rich and the poor, the violated servants and their masters, as well as the children and their cruel parents. It’s too late when everyone realizes that the evil comes from within themselves.

Director: Christian Petzold
Cast: Nina Hoss, Ronald Zehrfeld, Jasna Fritzi Bauer, Mark Waschke, Rainer Bock

In the 1980's, a young doctor is transferred to a small provincial hospital in East Germany. While secretly planning her escape to the West to reunite with her lover, she must deal with pervasive suspicion, mistrust, and spying. The day of her escape is approaching, but complications arise when a young refugee is hospitalized and Barbara stands up for her. Her only supporter is her boss André, but his motives are unclear - is he in love with Barbara, or is he a mole assigned to keep an eye on her? Christian Petzold succeeds in capturing the dark times of totalitarianism that Czech audiences are so familiar with. One woman and two men, in an era that has irreversibly rewritten so many personal histories.

2009 / 104 min. / English version with Czech subtitles
Director: Lars von Trier
Cast: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Willem Dafoe

A tragedy, which could easily have been averted, will change the lives of the Man and Woman. The Woman breaks down, the Man tries to save their marriage and ease their suffering. He proposes that, as some kind of joint therapy, they take refuge in a log cabin in the middle of a forest which, to the viewer’s surprise, might have come out of someone’s worst nightmare, which is what the couple’s stay in the cabin becomes. What was to have been their "paradise” transforms into hell on Earth. All too vivid natural scenery and perverse psychology play a major role in this bizarre experiment – will the Man and Woman return as a couple, or as separate individuals? Will they come back at all?

MEDIA - Journey Through Time
Germany
Director: Tom Tykwer
2010 / 119 min. / German-English version with Czech subtitles
Cast: Sophie Rois, Sebastian Schipper, Devid Striesow

Despite their open liaison which even tolerates infidelity, Hanna and Simon are stuck in a relationship which suffers from mild disillusion. They both fight the crisis by having an affair, which they both accidentally start with the same person - Adam. In a serious, but at the same time humorous way, the film "Three" looks into the life of modern people in their fourties, who are still discovering who they really are, who are still looking for a fixed point in their lives, and for their sexual identity. After the European blockbuster "The Perfume: The Story of A Murderer", Tom Tykwer returns to a cabinet drama and to genre overlaps, letting his comedy constantly balance on the edge of drama. He speaks tongue-in-cheek about topics such as testicular cancer or the end of a relationship, without ridiculing his characters or oversimplifying their situation.
